Basil plant is a member of the Lamiaceae (mint) family and is native to India. It has rituals importance in the Indian religion and is hence also known as holy basil. It is one of the most ancient grains of India and has a number of references in Indian scriptures too.

Cultivation and Production: India is the World's largest producer & exporter of Basil seeds. It is indigenous in the lower hills of Punjab and Himachal Pradesh and is cultivated throughout India.
In India it is mainly harvested in February and March.
