Turmeric is a flowering plant. This is a perennial herb, a native of South Asia. It is also known as "Indian Saffron" is the sacred spice of India.

Cultivation and Production: India is a leading producer and exporter of turmeric in the world, and Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Orissa, Karnataka, West Bengal, Gujarat, Meghalaya, Maharashtra, Assam are some of the states that cultivate turmeric. 

In India, it is mainly harvested in January to March.

Usage :

  • Turmeric is also more widely used as a colourant for textiles and food products. It is sometimes substituted for saffron as it is much less expensive but produces the same yellow colour. Turmeric has also been used as an alternative to medicine and can be made into a drink
  • One of the most important compounds in turmeric is curcumin, Which is responsible for most of turmeric's potential health benefits.
